Abstract

Objective: To assess the level of cognitive, emotional, and functional impairment in activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) through the use of Beck Inventory, Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), London Chest Activity of Daily Living (LCADL), and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Methods: This is an exploratory study conducted with 83 patients diagnosed with COPD in stages II and III, aged between 40 and 70 years, who were under follow-up at the Difficult-to-Control Asthma Unit of the Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital (RJ). Results: A total of 83 patients with stage II and III COPD were included, with a predominance of women aged between 61 and 70 years. On average, participants with stage III COPD had 8 years of education, while those with stage II achieved more than 15 years, with most working in the tertiary sector (80%). Half of the participants had smoked cigarettes (55.4%) for more than 30 years, and 12% were still active smokers. The tests revealed cognitive deficits, depressive symptoms, and difficulties performing ADLs. Conclusions: Further research involving occupational therapy in the rehabilitation of these patients is urgently needed to develop therapeutic interventions in the field of pulmonology. Such interventions aim to promote independence, autonomy, and reduce the impact of COPD on ADLs, IADLs, cognition, and emotional complaints.
