Visceral leishmaniasis (LV) is a chronic and debilitating, highly lethal disease with clinical and epidemiological aspects and characteristics of each region, with great relevance, responsible for the deaths of thousands of people (around 60,000 deaths per year), especially children under 10 years of age. LV is the in vitro protozoan parasite protease of the genus Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi, transmitted to humans and animals through the bite of hematophagous females, insects vectors of the genus Lutzomyia. The diagnosis of LV is complex and is based on clinical signs and symptoms, epidemiological, hematological and biochemical parameters. This review addresses the main clinical, immunological and pathological aspects of LV human in order to gather knowledge about the symptomatology of the disease and contribute to its clinical diagnosis.
