Abstract

The condition known as wheezing infant syndrome (SLS), also known as “wheezing baby,” is identified by the frequent occurrence of wheezing over the course of a month, or at least three episodes of wheezing within a two-month interval. It is common in children under 2 years of age and is related to exposure to environmental pollution, gastroesophageal reflux, family history of asthma and lung diseases. The objective of this study is to highlight how respiratory therapy can contribute to SLS. Physiotherapeutic techniques frequently used include: acceleration of respiratory flow (AFE), provoked cough, slow and deep expiration (ELPr), positioning and oxygen therapy. They contribute to clearing the airways, reexpanding the lungs, eliminating tracheobronchial secretions, equalizing lung volumes and restoring lung function. Respiratory physiotherapy in children and infants has been increasingly applied in hospital and outpatient settings, in certain cases allowing an early reduction in the use of antibiotics and the length of hospital stay.
