THE IMPORTANCE OF HEALTHCARE TEAM GUIDANCE REGARDING DRUG INTERACTION BETWEEN CONTRACEPTIONAL AND ANTIBIOTICS

The drug interaction between contraceptives and antibiotics is a topic of great relevance in clinical practice, given the wide use of these two classes of medications and their implications for women's reproductive health. The lack of adequate guidance from the healthcare team can result in unintended consequences, such as reduced contraceptive effectiveness and increased risk of unplanned pregnancy. The selection of articles was carried out in accordance with the proposed subject and the databases searched will be: Nursing Journal, Scientific Electronic Library Online, Google Scholar, and Virtual Health Library. It is crucial that health professionals are aware of these interactions and are able to adequately guide patients who use oral contraceptives. This includes recommending the use of additional contraceptive methods, such as condoms, during concurrent use of antibiotics known to interact with contraceptives. It is also important to inform the prescribing doctor about the use of hormonal contraceptives before starting any antibiotic treatment. The results of the narrative review highlight the importance of the pharmacokinetics of both contraceptives and antibiotics, emphasizing how these substances are absorbed, distributed, metabolized and excreted by the body, and how these processes can affect their effectiveness and safety. Furthermore, raising awareness among healthcare professionals about bacterial resistance due to inappropriate use of antibiotics is essential to combat this worrying public health issue. In conclusion, the drug interaction between contraceptives and antibiotics is a relevant topic that requires attention from health professionals. Adequate guidance, awareness and ongoing education are essential to ensure contraceptive effectiveness, prevent unplanned pregnancies and promote patients' reproductive health. Constant updating of health professionals and the adoption of institutional policies that value patient education are essential for quality care in this area.
