LINGUAL PHRENECTOMY IN PEDIATRICS

Lingual frenectomy is a surgical procedure that consists of removing the lingual frenulum, which is a small fold of tissue located on the underside of the tongue. This surgery may be indicated in cases where the lingual frenulum is too short or too thick, which can cause problems with speech, chewing, swallowing and breathing. In pediatrics, lingual frenectomy may be indicated in babies who have difficulty breastfeeding due to limited movement of the tongue. This limitation can be caused by a short or thick lingual frenulum, which makes sucking difficult and can lead to nutrition and development problems. This is an integrative review research, searching national articles published in full between 2013 and 2023, in the Virtual Health Library (BVS). LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences) database. Surgery is commonly performed on infants and young children who have difficulty breastfeeding or have speech problems due to a short or tight lingual frenulum. The procedure is relatively simple and usually only takes a few minutes to complete. In young children, lingual frenectomy is usually performed under general anesthesia to minimize discomfort and anxiety. After surgery, it is normal to experience some pain and discomfort in the mouth area. Your doctor may prescribe pain relievers to help manage pain and reduce inflammation. Feeding can be a little difficult the first few days after surgery, but most children recover quickly and are soon back to eating normally. In general, childhood lingual frenectomy is considered safe and effective and can help improve a child's breastfeeding, speech, and oral health.
