Abstract

The present study aims to identify in the literature the impact of dietary gluten on autism spectrum disorder. Autism also known as autism spectrum disorder ASD is a developmental disorder that affects the way a person thinks, interacts and communicates. This multifactorial disorder causes difficulty in communication interaction and presents restricted and repetitive behaviors. Removing gluten from the diet of autistic people has become a possible strategy for improving gastrointestinal symptoms and behavioral symptoms. Articles from the period 2011 to 2019, in Portuguese and English, available in scientific databases, were included in this study, totaling 7 works. Restricting gluten in the autistic diet brought some benefits such as improved behavior and gastrointestinal symptoms and also presented some negative symptoms, however more studies are still needed to prove the results. Within this context, monitoring by a nutritionist is essential, focusing on the health and well-being of the autistic patient. The methodology applied was an integrative review of the literature, through summaries and experimental articles on the topic on a scientific basis.
