The THE BENEFITS AND HARMS OF PACIFIER SUCKING IN THE FIRST YEAR OF LIFE

The benefits and harms of the non-nutritive sucking habit are discussed in the literature, as there is a lack of agreement among health professionals about its use during the first year of a baby's life. The objective of this work was to carry out a literature review to verify current publications that address the main reports, positive and negative, linked to pacifier use. A literature review was carried out by searching the databases PubMed, Scielo, Virtual Health Library (VHL) and scientific works available on websites of universities and federal entities, published between January 2014 and December 2024, in all languages. Articles were selected that address the determinants of pacifier use in the first year of life, as well as articles that relate pacifier use to early weaning, non-pharmacological analgesia and the benefits and harms of using artificial teats. Articles published in another period and that dealt with other subjects, or the use of pacifiers after the first year of life, were excluded. After content collection, 15 articles were found, and after reading the title and summary, 10 were selected to be read in full. It is concluded that new studies are needed focusing on the development of updated and more specific guidelines. Furthermore, it is important to update health professionals and parents to better understand the influences caused by non-nutritive sucking.
