Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a group of chronic metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia, classified into type 1, associated with insulin deficiency, and type 2, which is more prevalent and linked to insulin resistance. The global prevalence of diabetes has significantly increased, resulting in rising mortality rates. In Brazil, diabetes ranked as the seventh leading cause of death in 2021. This study investigated mortality due to diabetes mellitus in the 10th Health Regional of Paraná between 2013 and 2022, considering variables such as age, sex, and external factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic. This descriptive, quantitative research analyzed data from the Mortality Information System (SIM) and identified 1,483 deaths attributed to diabetes in the 10th Regional, representing 4.2% of the total deaths. The majority of these fatalities occurred in individuals over the age of 60, with a predominance of female cases (53.81%). During the pandemic, a significant increase in deaths was observed, indicating the adverse interaction between COVID-19 and diabetes. The findings corroborate national patterns, with a higher mortality rate noted among women. Additionally, the temporal analysis revealed fluctuations in mortality rates, potentially influenced by the pandemic context and improvements in data classification. This study underscores the importance of appropriate diabetes management to reduce complications and fatal outcomes, suggesting a need for continuous monitoring and more effective public health policies.
