Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: Depression impairs patients' quality of life, affecting approximately 300 million people worldwide. It requires qualified therapeutic management, however, treatment often encounters refractoriness. In recent decades, the influence of the gut microbiome on the disorder's pathophysiology has been discovered, which may indicate paths for new therapeutic approaches. Objective: To determine whether the gut microbiome influences the pathophysiology of depression and what mechanisms are involved. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review, conducted in six phases, in which Health Sciences Descriptors were combined as follows: <<Depression AND Physiopathology AND "Gastrointestinal Microbiome" AND "Brain-Gut Axis">>. This strategy was used in the databases U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes Health (PubMed), Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), ProQuest Central (ProQuest), Dimensions, and OpenAlex, where a total of 358 articles were eligible, of which 15 were selected for this research. Results: Of the 15 studies analyzed, 100% indicated that the microbiota influences the pathophysiology of depression, pointing to seven main mechanisms of influence, with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and stress being the most cited among them. Conclusion: The gut microbiota seems to have a significant influence on the pathophysiology of depression, opening new perspectives for therapeutic approaches, suggesting that modulating this microbiota could be a promising strategy in the treatment of this disorder. However, further studies are needed to deepen the understanding of this relationship and validate new approaches.

Key words: Brain-Gut Axis; Host Microbial Interactions; Microbiota; Depressive Disorder.
