Abstract

Sudden Cardiac Death can be one of the first manifestations of congenital heart diseases in children and adolescents; thus, early diagnosis and appropriate intervention are of utmost importance. In this context, this systematic review aims to evaluate the outcomes of using implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) in children and adolescents with congenital heart diseases from January 2018 to June 2023, clarifying their complications and elucidating the results obtained in recent studies to contribute to medical knowledge. This research was conducted through the databases PubMed, Lilacs, and Scielo, selecting articles that assessed the use of ICDs in children and adolescents with congenital heart diseases. Out of an initial 379 studies, 14 were included in the final analysis. A total of 650 patients were analyzed, with 376 males and 274 females. The cardiac diseases were categorized into three groups: Primary Electrical Disease, Congenital Heart Disease, and Cardiomyopathies. Complications occurred in 134 patients (20.58%), appropriate shocks in 155 (23.81%), and inappropriate shocks in 120 patients (18.54%). The average age of the patients assessed was 14.03 years, the average follow-up time was 66.4 months, and the mortality rate in this population was 2.15%.
