Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is characterized as a chronic metabolic disorder that has no cure, being represented by glycemic increases in the bloodstream associated with dysfunctions in the action of insulin or deficiency in its secretion. Its treatment is complex and requires lifestyle reorganization. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes Integrative and Complementary Health Practices (PICS), alternative methods included, in the Traditional Complementary and Integrative Medicines (TCIM) approach. Many of the established practices are used to control the disease, promoting in-depth and comprehensive care for its users. Objective: Understand Complementary Integrative Practices for the management of diabetic patients through a bibliographic review of the literature. Methodology: The study followed a qualitative and quantitative approach of an integrative literature review. For development, publications available in journals and scientific organizations and in LILACS, MEDLINE, SCIELO and BDENF databases were used. Results: A high prevalence of the use of PICS worldwide is evident, however, the need for dissemination of information and professional guidance is perceived. Conclusion: There is a need to expand more scientific studies related to the application of complementary integrative practices, and it is of interest to prioritize the occupational training of those who assume an important mission and responsibility in the treatment of diabetics.
