Resumen

Humanized childbirth has been much discussed in recent years because of its benefit to women in favor of reducing caesarean sections and forceps as well as unnecessary interventions during labor and normal delivery. The present work is a literature review made by consulting scientific articles published in the Scielo database, manuals and ordinances of the Ministry of Health. The objective of this article is to broaden the discussions about the benefits of normal humanized birth, its contribution to the valorization of women and the importance of nursing professionals in this process. We report on the historical process of humanization of childbirth emphasizing its importance for reducing maternal and fetal mortality and rescuing women's citizenship; the role of doulas and nurses in labor and delivery. It is concluded that humanized childbirth aims to exclude the mechanism of current births, rescuing the protagonism of mother and child, aiming at the respect and active performance of women throughout the process.
